The Memorial Complex “The bed of honour and Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier with the Eternal Flame”
The memorial complex is located at the burial site of the participants in the revolutionary movement and the Civil War, as well as the Soviet soldiers |who fell in the battles for Petrozavodsk |in years of the Great Patriotic War. In 1969 the remains of the Unknown Soldier, found in Medvezhyegorsk region near Lake Eri-Lamba were buried here. The central element of the memorial is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the Eternal Flame of Glory, which symbolizes the undying memory of the heroic Soviet soldiers. The
memorial complex also includes a fraternal burial site, where warriors who died during the Civil and Great Patriotic Wars are buried, as well as prominent state and party figures of Soviet Karelia. To the left of the Eternal Flame, there is a granite block with a commemorative text honoring the heroes who gave their lives for the happiness of the people.The solemn opening of the memorial took place on June 28, 1969, on the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the republic's capital from the occupiers. The authors of the memorial complex project were architects E. F. Andreev and E. V.
Voskresensky, sculptors E. A. Akulov and L. K. Davtyan, in 1973.
The Military Memorial Complex “The Alley of Remembrance and Glory”
The complex is located at the junction of Gogol Street and F. Engels Street near Gubernatorial garden. The first effort to build the memorial complex was undertaken in 1984. That year a 200-tonned granite block in 5 meters high was set and the surrounding area was cleared out. The authors of the project – architects Eugeniy Karmanov and artist Georgiy Ivanov. The complex immortalizes the memory of all military formations of the Karelian Front that participated in the defense and liberation of the region. The stones also bear the names of 134 Heroes of the Soviet Union and 15 full Cavaliers of the Order of Glory, who were awarded these titles for their distinguished actions in battle as part of units and formations of the Karelian Front. In 2015 the Committee of veterans of war and military service decided to create a memorial complex around the monument. The memorial complex represents a gallery of nine rectangular granite blocks situated along the path. The concept of the alley, designed by architects, symbolizes the unity and cohesion of the army, which stands as a united shield in defense of the country. Each stone corresponds to a separate army that was part of the Karelian Front. The alley looks especially impressive and solemn during the dark hours of the day when the stones are illuminated with red light
The Stele “A City of Military Glory”
The unveiling of the monument was held on the 8 May, 2018. The monument is made of three granite boulders. The author of the obelisk is Aleksandr Kim.In 1944 the republic of Karelia was liberated from fascist invaders. In the year on the 30 September the day of the 76th anniversary of this event the stele «City of Military Glory» was officially unveiled. This granite column is 11,8 meters in high and two-headed bronze eagle on the top. The monument is situated not far from Kirov square. On the front side of the pedestal on the bronze cartouche there is a text of Presidential Decree awarding Petrozavodsk the name of City of Military Glory. On the back there is Petrozavodsk coat of arms. Next to the stele you can see on the granite walls thematic bronze bas-reliefs are set. These bas-reliefs depict some plots from the history of military glory of the city: from Peter the first to liberation of Petrozavodsk. The draft project of the monument was made by the architect Aleksander Savelyev. The author of the monument is Salavat Scherbackov. Similar steles have been set in 45 cities of Military Glory in Russia.

The Monument depicts a large metal bird. It includes 12 obelisks with the names of 12 cities liberated by soldiers from Karelia. Among these cities are: Murmansk, Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad, Sevastopol, Odessa, Kyiv, Kerch, Novorossiysk, Minsk, Tula and Brest. The names of the cities are engraved on memorial slabs made of gabbro-diabase; under the slabs there are capsules with sacred soil from these cities.The opening of the memorial took place on May 9, 1995 and was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The Gallery of Hero Cities is located at the intersection of Pobedy Boulevard and Oktyabrsky Prospekt, opposite the square named after. G. K. Zhukova The architects of the project are A. V. Maricheva, A. Y. Kobyaka, I. V. Mazalova, N. R. Molchanova. The sculptor - V. Strepetova.

The Memorial to the Victims of Concentration Camps
Peski cemetery was a burial place for those who died in the Finish concentration camp. The monument in memory of the prisoners of Petrozavodsk concentration camps was erected at the entrance of the cemetery. It looks like semi-sphere which consists of two parts. The left side includes three pink granite boulders with two-sided bas-relief depicting the figures of the prisoners. The right side comprises three black gabbrodiabase boulders. The parts of the monument symbolize the deceased and the survived. Of the top of the monument there is a crown of thorns with the sculpture of Virgin Mary in the center. Eight steles are installed at both sides of the memorial. Names of the buried prisoners are written on the steles. Three thousand five hundred names are immortalized on the monument. The memorial was unveiled on the 24 June 2017. The author of the memorial is an artist and an architect Phyodor Parshin. A collective grave of soldiers who died defending Petrozavodsk in 1941 and during Soviet-Finish war is also located in the south-western part of the civil cemetery.
Tank «T-34»
In the end of June 1944 during the Svir-Petrozavodsk operation the forces of the Karelian front commanded by General K.A. Meretskov retook the capital of Karelia Petrozavodsk. On the 21 June 1944 the Soviet troops forced the Svir. The first to force the river were the fighters of the 98 and 99 of the Guards divisions of the corps Mironov and the 114 of the 272 divisions of the corps of Gnidin. They were supported by amphibians and amphibious tanks of the 92 regiment. By 16 hours, Soviet troops occupied a springboard with a depth of 2,5-3 km. In the evening, the sappers made two bridges and twenty ferry crossings. They began to transfer heavy weapons. By the end of the day, the bridgehead was occupied on a stretch of 12 km wide and 6 km deep. The 7 Army was tasked to release Olonets no later than 23-24 in June and take Pitkäranta in July about 2-4. The right wing of the army should have freed Petrozavodsk as soon as possible. On the 28-29 June 1944 the 31st separate battalion of the marine infantry entered the city. Thousands of citizens welcomed the liberators. On the 27th June 1969 on the 25th anniversary of Petrozavodsk deliberation the war monument was erected. The battle tank T-34 installed on a high pedestal symbolizes the victory of the Soviet people.
The Gallery of the Soviet Union Heroes
The Gallery is located at the juction of Antikaynen and Krasnaya streets. The gallery immortalizes the names of 28 Heroes of the Soviet Union - sons and daughters of the Karelian region. The first native of Karelia to be awarded this high title in 1940 was pilot P.M. Petrov, who performed a heroic feat during the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940. The portraits are presented in the gallery, for outstanding merits in the fight against the invaders during the Great Patriotic War: F.M. Aleksandrov, I.I. Artamonov, T.N. Artemyev, A.N. Afanasyev, V.S. Baskov, N.G. Varlamov, A.P. Dorofeev, V.M. Zaitsev, F.M. Krylov, A.M. Lisitsyna, A.R. Mashakov, M.V. Melenteva, I.A. Meshkov, N.T. Omelin, A.N. Pashkov, A.P. Pashkov, V.N. Pchelintsev, N.F. Repnikov, N.I. Rigachin, A.E. Rumyantsev, M.T. Ryabov, P.A. Tikilyainen, I.P. Tornev, V.M. Filippov, A.I. Fofanov, F.A. Shelshakov. The citizen of Petrozavodsk Rear Admiral Yu.I. Padorin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1976 for courage and heroism demonstrated in the performance of a particularly important task assigned by the command.The monument is a concrete ring installed on a round platform. Inside there are 28 portraits of Karelian soldiers. They became heroes on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War and were honored the title of Heroes of the Soviet Union. Their portraits were turned onto memorial slabs made of gabbro-diabase. The gallery was opened on October 29, 1977.The authors of the gallery are the architect E.V. Voskresensky, the sculptor L.K. Davidyan, the artist E.S. Grigoryan, the engineer Y. Gubin.
The Bed of Honour in Solomennoe
Fifteen unknown soviet soldiers were reburied at this cemetery. They all were killed in a battle during WWII. This bed of honour comprises scattered graves from the territory of Solomennoe village and its suburbs. The tombstone is made in a shape of flower bed. In 1969 an obelisk made of gabbrodiabase was erected in the center of the flower bed. At the front of the obelisk there is a steel five pointed star. The basement is enframed with gypsum wreath. At both sides of the bed of honour there are podiums with eleven polished gabbrodiabase grave lids where the surnames of Solomennoe residents who were killed during WWII.
The Memorial Sign to the Sailors of the Onega Military Flotilla
In honor of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the city, on the twenty sixth of June 2004, a memorial sign was opened to the sailors of the Onega military flotilla. Now there is a modern passenger pier of the Petrozavodsk river port.
